Son of David Stewart Mackenzie and Rebecca Noble. Born 10 March 1853, Edinburgh, Scotland. Emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand, 1858. Educated Green Island School, North Dunedin District School. Married Ida Henrietta Nantes 24 September 1884. Children: five sons, two daughters. Worked as clerk, surveyor, farmer and storekeeper. Explored Fiordland and the Catlins district, helped open the Milford Track and found Mackenzie Pass to Dusky Sound. Fellow of Royal Geographical Society, 1898. Advocated nature conservation as member of parliament in the 1890s. Balclutha Borough Councillor 1881 – 1887. Elected member of parliament for Clutha 1887. Resigned in 1896 to become a marketing agent, representing farmers’ co-operatives in London. Elected MP for Waihemo in 1900; also represented Waikouaiti, Taieri and Egmont between 1900 and 1912. Also Mayor of Roslyn (1901–05), and (between 1900 and 1909) member of Otago Education Board and Otago Boys’ and Girls’ High School Boards. Joined Liberal government of Sir Joseph Ward 1908, becoming minister of agriculture, minister of industries and commerce, and minister in charge of tourism. Succeeded Ward as leader of the Liberals in 1911. Prime minister 1911 – 1912. Appointed High Commissioner to United Kingdom, 1912. Served on Imperial War Graves Commission and royal commission into the Dardanelles campaign. Delegate to 1919 Paris Peace Conference. Knighted 1916, GCMG 1920. Appointed to Legislative Council 1921, 1928. Died at Dunedin 4 February 1930. From: |
