Mary Ann Yates née Jones (1832/33 – 1915)

Mary Ann née Jones was born in Wales in August 1832/3. She married in England Edward Knowles and was widowed with two children, Mary Anne and John Knowles.
She married John Yates on the 2nd of February 1863 in Hobart. The marriage certificate of John Yates and Mary Knowles on the 2nd of February 1863 states that John was 32 years old and Mary 30. He was a Pavoir and she a Widow. The witnesses were F.W. Patson and Geo. Cooper and the ceremony took place at St David’s Cathedral in Hobart. Both John and Mary made their mark with an X. John and Mary Ann Knowles/Yates had three children, William, Esther and David.

Mary Ann Knowles/Yates died in Dunedin on December 13th 1915 aged 82 years and was buried on December 14th in the same plot as her husband. Her Death Certificate states that she died of senile decay of the heart, 6 months, and exhaustion. Mary Ann’s last known address was 14 Maybank Street, Opoho, Dunedin (her daughter’s residence).
