Edward Stratton c1853 – 1931

In his day, Edward Stratton was one of the most prominent brass band conductors in Dunedin. Stratton was born in East Grinstead, Sussex, around 1853. He was a cornet player, this instrument being similar to the trumpet but with a wider bore and deeper mouthpiece, giving it a softer, rounder sound. Stratton arrived in Dunedin around 1876 and worked as a customs officer. He soon joined the Volunteer Band, and then became conductor of the Dunedin Garrison Band. Stratton was conductor of the Kaikorai Band for 18 years, from about 1884, and during his time this band became one of the best in New Zealand. Stratton was later conductor of the Dunedin Naval Band. Edward Stratton died in 1931 at the age of 78, survived by his wife, three sons, and three daughters.
