Walter John Guthrie (1869–1918)

Walter John Guthrie was born in Dunedin on 18 October 1869. He received his secondary education at Otago Boys’ High School. In 1913 he helped to organise and run the school’s fiftieth jubilee celebrations.

His occupations are recorded as Accountant, Shipping Merchant and Shipping Agent. He succeeded his father Henry (d. 1913) as the head of a shipping company the latter had established in Dunedin in the nineteenth century.

He married Margaret Marshall Hepburn in 1900. The ceremony was held “in the house of Mrs. Margaret Hepburn, Roslyn” (Marriage Certificate entry). The latter was the bride’s mother and the house was in Leven Street. The officiating minister was Rev. William Hewitson and the witnesses were J.N. Lawson and J.H. Hepburn, respectively cousin and sister of the bride. They had five children: Margaret (b. 1901), Walter (1903), Nora (1905), Colin (1906) and Cicely (1914).

Walter died of a thyroid complaint and had been residing at 75 Clyde St, Dunedin, at the time.
