Anne Gollar (née Yates) 1839 – 1929

Anne (Yates) Gollar was born on the 27th January 1839 at Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire, England, and christened at St Peters, Bolton, on 10th February 1839. Anne was probably just a young girl when she ended up in Tasmania. There is a Mrs Yates and child listed as being aboard the Shamrock from England to Launceston in 1846, but it has not yet been confirmed whether this is the same Anne Yates and her mother. Before marriage, Anne Yates was a maid to the Anglican bishop of Hobart. She married John Gollar in Hobart town at the United Church of Scotland when she was nineteen years old. Witnesses at their wedding were Benjamin Hall Brown and Ellen Flitcroft. Ellen could be related, as Ann Unsworth’s sister, Elizabeth, married an Isaac Flitcroft on 1st January 1818 in St Peter, Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire, England.

“Granny” Anne Gollar had much sadness in her life, beginning with the death of her first-born twin son in 1858, followed by the death of her father (date yet to be confirmed), and then her mother in 1873, grandson William in 1887, three stillborn grandchildren in the years 1894, 1896 and 1899, her daughter Margaret in 1899, Margaret’s husband John Smith in 1902, her husband in 1905 followed by her son in 1916. After 1902 she raised the four Smith children.

The great-granddaughter of Anne Gollar often used to talk about visiting “Granny Gollar” at 412 High Street, Dunedin. She described her as “living like a queen” in a house full of beautiful furniture and ornaments.

Portraits of Anne and John are now in the family’s possession, and some hang in the Otago Early Settler’s Museum in Dunedin, apparently donated in 1944, but most “treasures” went back to Australia when Anne’s daughter Elizabeth returned to Australia to live with her niece Girlie following Anne’s death.

Anne and John had five children:

 – John Peter (twin)

 – William James (twin)

 – Maryanne Josephine

 – Elizabeth (“Great-Aunt Lizzie”)

 – Margaret

Others buried here: Anne’s husband John and her son-in-law Ebenezer Gibson.
