THOMPSON, ELLEN

Ellen Thompson was married to William Thompson, a well-known citizen of Dunedin. She had immigrated from England, and had been in New Zealand for 15 years, at the time of her death on 8th February 1878, aged 49 years.

Monumental Inscription


on left side of monument as seen from the road:-

TO THE MEMORY OF

ELLEN

THE BELOVED WIFE OF

WILLIAM THOMPSON

WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE

THE 8th FEBRUARY 1878

AGED 49 YEARS

"STRANGE FRIEND PAST, PRESENT, AND TO BE:

LOVED DEEPLIER, DARKLIER UNDERSTOOD:

BEHOLD! I DREAM A DREAM OF GOOD

AND MINGLE ALL THE WORLD WITH THEE"

DIED 27th SEPT. 1891

AGED 56 YEARS

on front of monument as seen from the road:-

THIS IS A PLACE OF REST, THEN

TAKE A SEAT, WANDERING STRANGER,

AND CONTEMPLATE THE SCENE,

OVER THERE.

"OH, THE SPACIOUS GRAND PLANTATION,

OVER THERE.

SHINING LIKE A CONSTELLATION,

OVER THERE.

HOLY WITH A CONSECRATION,

FROM ALL TEARS AND TRIBULATION

FROM ALL GRIME, AND GRIEF, AND CARE:

TO ALL USES GOOD AND FAIR,

OVER THERE".

STOP, TRAVELLER STOP, ERE YOU GO BY:

AS YOU ARE NOW, SO ONCE WAS I:

AS I AM NOW, SO YOU MUST BE:
