Donald Charles Cameron (1850-1932)

Donald was born in Inverness and was the son of James and Isabella Cameron. The family emigrated to Victoria in 1853, where his father joined the gold rush. They came to Otago in 1861, but his father was lost in the snows of 1863. His mother married again in 1867.

Donald was apprenticed as a cabinetmaker in Dunedin, and was a founding member of the Good Templars in 1872. In 1874 he married Christina Thomson McNeil. In 1875 he became a full-time temperance worker as Grand Secretary of the Good Templar Order. From 1878 he published the Temperance Herald, which was circulated throughout New Zealand for 24 years. He was also active in the Masonic Lodge, Sons and Daughters of Temperance, and the Methodist Central Mission, as well as others. From 1903 he was a member of the Dunedin Licensing Committee. His wife supported him in his work, and also ran a temperance boarding house for some years. Donald Cameron died on 7 May 1932, 16 years after his wife.
