Stuart Percy Hawthorne was born on 16 January 1873 at the ‘Rectory’ in Dunedin. He was the first son of Stuart Hawthorne, who was the Rector of Otago Boys’ High School (1869-1874), and Marie Willeby nee Angel (both of whom are interred in the same plot in the Northern Cemetery). Stuart Percy’s entire working life was spent as a clerk with the Government Insurance Office but he had a continuing interest in long-distance running. He was a member of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club and the Wellington Harriers’ Club, and held the record, in 1895, for the five mile championship race. In December 1895 he was picked to represent Wellington at the Athletic Championships, running in the one and three mile races. He was a frequent competitor in cross-country events and in 1897, won selection to the New Zealand team sent to the Australasian Championships in Sydney, as well as being appointed the team manager. He was captain of the Wellington Harriers in 1903. Stuart Percy Hawthorne died in Wellington on 25 March 1954 |
