William MacIldowie (1851-1894) William MacIldowie was born on 2nd March 1851 in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the eldest son of Daniel MacIldowie and Margaret McEwen. William married Betsy Ann Nichol Fergusson Whyte in 1879 in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1880, William and Betsy moved to New Zealand, settling in Dunedin. William worked as a claims clerk with the Union Steamship Company. He invested heavily in shares in a company planning to develop a mine at Nenthorn, near Middlemarch, Central Otago. He became severely depressed when the venture failed and he lost all of his money together with some of Betsy’s. While in this depressed state he took his own life at Dunedin. William died on 1st February 1894 leaving his wife a widow; they had no children. William is buried in the Northern Cemetery with his wife Betsy and his mother Margaret. |
