Walter Miller (c.1827-1898)

Walter Miller arrived in New Zealand nine years before the rest of his family.
He arrived on the Larkins in 1849, and settled at Waitati as a shepherd,
then moved to Dunedin for a time. Some of his children were born in Dunedin.

Walter took up land at Glenore, between Glenore and Adams Flat, and called it
Roxburgh Station. He bought more land as time went on, and put his younger brothers
on to it to manage it.

He then went exploring with John Cargill, and they found good land in the
Teviot and Millers Flat area. John Cargill took up land on one side of the
river and Walter took land on the other at what is now known as Millers
Flat. Descendants of his youngest sister still hold some of that land – by
name of Garden.

The rabbit problem put paid to his endeavours, and eventually he retired to
Dunedin, and lived there until his death at Clarks Flat where he had been
visiting family.
