ROBERT RUSSELL 1845 – 1900

Robert Russell was the son of Robert Russell (born about 1806 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland) and Isabella Marshall (born about 1826 in Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire, Scotland). They married on 2 August 1844 in Cumbernauld, and Robert was born on 14 December 1845 and christened on 7 June 1846 in Cumbernauld.

Robert married Agnes Marshall on 13 July 1866 in Glasgow, Scotland.

On 8 April 1874, Robert and Agnes and their children Isabella (aged 4), Elizabeth (aged 3) and Jane (aged 1 year) left Glasgow as assisted immigrants to Otago aboard the Cartsburn. They arrived several weeks later on 14 July. Unfortunately their youngest child Jane died during the voyage. However, another child, Ramsey Burns Cartsburn was born during the voyage on 18 May and was named after the engineer, doctor, and ship itself. The captain’s name had been taken by another child born on the ship. The cost of their passage to the government was 47 pounds, 5 shillings.

Robert and Agnes later had another daughter, Robina, who married John Henry Trenbath in 1905.

Robert died on 23 April 1900 after lapsing into a diabetic coma. He had suffered from diabetes for about four years.
