Robert Boyle Monkman (1858-1886)

Monkman was an officer employed by the Union Steamship Company.

At age 28 years he was First Officer aboard the S. S. Taiaroa when he was killed in one of New Zealand’s most spectacular shipwrecks. His vessel grounded near Waipapa Point, off Kaikoura, on a voyage between Wellington and Dunedin.

Thirty four people including Monkman were drowned.
