Alice McDonald married Alexander Taylor, a railway porter, and their first daughter, Mary Isabella Taylor, was born in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 18th June 1871. In 1877 Alice emigrated with her family from Glasgow on the James N. Fleming, arriving in Dunedin on 3rd October 1877.

For ten years the family moved around Otago and Southland, and three more children were born. Alice Taylor suffered from severe alcoholism, which apparently contributed to the family’s transience and some domestic violence. Her daughter Mary’s first attempt to live independently from her parents ended when the blindness brought on as a result of an attack meant that after a stay in hospital she had to return to her parents’ home, which by this time was in Pukerau, Southland and soon in Waikaka near Gore. Later, while Alice and Alexander were alive they lived intermittently with their daughter in Dunedin.

Alice Taylor died on 27th September 1911 at the age of 63 years. She is buried here with two granddaughters, one an infant, the other who died aged 24 years.
