Thomas Robson was born about 1830 in Allendale, Northumberland, son of Jacob Robson and Mary Chatt. He emigrated to New Zealand with his second wife Mary Ann Robson (nee Thirlwell) and 9 of his children on the “City of Sparta” ship arriving in Dunedin on 11 September 1880. A further four children were born between their arrival and 1887. The family settled in Henley in a house which was given to them for free by the Henley Land Company on condition that they milk cows. However Thomas fell out with his family and left Henley and as a consequence his family had to leave also. Thomas died on 3rd July 1897 in Dunedin Hospital from “Syncope Mitral Regurgitation” and is buried in a pauper’s grave at the Northern Cemetery.

N.B. Cemetery records show that Thomas Robson died on 5 July 1897, however his death certificate says 3 July 1897.
