Helen Gardner Bealey was the daughter of John Bealey, an early Canterbury runholder. She and John Halliday Scott, the professor of anatomy and physiology at the University of Otago Medical School, were married in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on 18 January 1883. They were to have two sons and three daughters. Helen Scott died in 1899.
