The Family of John and Ellen Woodhouse.

John and Ellen Woodhouse and their family emigrated from Liverpool to Dunedin in 1890 and initially lived in Ann Street, Roslyn. They were accompanied by their daughters Margaret, Florence, Henrietta, Bertha and Irene, as well as grandparents Henry and Ellen Pascoe. Both John and Henry were Master Mariners (sea captains) and John continued his maritime employment from Dunedin until his early death in 1895.

In spite of the loss of their father when the eldest was 15 the Woodhouse sisters all forged significant careers. Margaret was a primary teacher who married Alexander Durward in 1925 and is buried in the Oamaru Cemetery. Florence became a clerk in the Department of Lands and Survey, worked in the national office in Wellington, and was awarded an MBE in 1947. Henrietta graduated MA from Otago University then taught in seconday schools in Otago and later in Wellington. Bertha taught in South Otago primary schools including Owaka. Irene graduated MB ChB from Otago University in 1916 and was the Mataura doctor for most of the 48 years she practised there.
