Biography

Maud was the eldest daughter of Thomas S. Payton, a printer, of 234 Castle Street Dunedin. She married Charles William Logan on 9th January 1902 at the residence of her parents. They were married by the Rev. W. Sinclair.

Maud and Charles had two children, Thomas Albert Ernest Logan, born in 1904 and Maude Margaret Logan born in April 1906, both at Melbourne Street South Dunedin

When Charles died suddenly on 1st July 1906 at Melbourne Street, Maud was left a widow with two young children. A letter written by J. Mortimer, of Douglas Street, St Kilda, published in the Otago Witness of 12th September 1906, appealed for material assistance for Maud; “How heavily must the blow have fallen upon her who was widowed by his untimely death. There are two children – one two years and four months, and the other five months old. Since the birth of the last child the mother has suffered from partial paralysis in the right hand, and this seriously incapacitates her from doing hard work. The house the family occupied in South Dunedin will be the property of Mrs Logan. She has been obliged to leave the house that it might be let to provide a little income of 10s a week. She and the two children have gone to live with her parents in Castle Street. Knowing all the parties well, and the trying circumstances in which the widow and children are left, I can confidently and hopefully appeal for subscriptions to be sent”.

Maud Margaret Logan died on 14th June 1924 at 234 Castle Street.
