John Sparrow (c.1827-1904)

In 1874 John Sparrow, aged 47, after 27 years with Scotland’s Caledonian Railway, emigrated from Scotland and brought his family to New Zealand aboard the Mairi Bhan, arriving in Port Chalmers in July. At this time his family consisted of his wife Ann (aged 45), sons John (18) and Robert (16), and daughters Annie (13), Agnes (12), Mary (9) and Jeanie (3). John became the senior engine driver on the Otago Railways.

John Sparrow died on 26th May 1904, aged 77 years, and is buried with his wife Ann in the family plot here in the Northern Cemetery.
