Thomas, Margaret and Elizabeth emmigrated to New Zealand sometime in the 1850s, settling first in West Tamaki, Auckland. By 1861 the family was in Napier, and had finally settled in Dunedin by 1867 where Thomas worked as a labourer. Thomas Nicholson died on 29 June 1873 aged 68, and is buried in Northern Cemetery, Dunedin. His children remained in southern New Zealand where their descendants still live.
