Charlotte (Lottie) Wedlake (1864-1939)

Charlotte (Lottie) Wedlake was the daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (née Beswetherick) Wedlake. She was born in Cornwall in 1864.

Lottie and her brothers, Frederick and John, were initially left behind in England when their parents came to New Zealand in the late 1860s for the gold rush. However, in 1874 when Lottie was 10 years old, the children came out to New Zealand on the ship Asia, arriving in Otago on 26th April of that year to join their parents in Blue Spur, a town above Gabriel’s Gully near Lawrence, where they attended Blue Spur School. In the 1876 school examinations Lottie was 2nd in Writing.

By 1906 Fred and Elizabeth were living in Dunedin, at 264 Great King Street. Since Lottie never married, it is assumed that she also lived there. Later she moved to 359 Castle Street, living there with her mother Elizabeth and her brother John after his return from World War 1. Lottie died in March 1939, years after Elizabeth (who died in April 1923) and John (who died in 1926). Lottie is buried here in the Northen Cemetery in the Wedlake family plot with her parents, brothers and sister-in-law.
