Mary Ann Driver (1836 – 1915)

Mary Ann Driver nee Chalis was born in 1836, Surrey, England. She emigrated to Victoria, Australia and married William Driver in Melbourne on 15 August 1853. William and Mary moved from Victoria to Dunedin sailing from Melbourne, on board the ‘Bruce’ in 1863. Legend has it that Challis Point on the Dunedin Peninsula is named after a relative of Mary Ann.

Together, William and Ann had the following children:

– Francis William (born 1854 in Melbourne)

– Emma (born 1856)

– Jane (born 1858 at Sandhurst (modern Bendigo), Victoria. (Died as an infant)

– Jane (born 15 October, 1860 at Bendigo Flat).

– Rosina (born 10 June, 1864 in Dunedin).

– George (born 1870 in Dunedin)

– James (born 1871 in Dunedin)

– Nellie

Alice Grace (born 1880 in Dunedin).

Mary Ann died 31 March, 1915 at Harrington Street, Port Chalmers aged 80 years. The informant was her son James, with whom she had been residing. She is buried with her husband.
