Ann Sparrow (c.1829-1906)

In 1874 Ann Sparrow emigrated from Scotland with her husband John and their family to New Zealand aboard the Mairi Bhan, arriving in Port Chalmers in July. At this time Ann was aged 45, her husband was 47, sons John and Robert were 18 and 16 respectively, and daughters Annie, Agnes, Mary and Jeanie were 13, 12, 9 and 3 years respectively. John became the senior engine driver on the Otago Railways.

Ann Sparrow died on 10th September 1906, aged 77 years, and is buried with her husband, who died a few years before her, in the family plot here in the Northern Cemetery.
