Margaret was born in Scotland. She married John Burns at Prestonpans, Scotland on 7th November 1844. They sailed to New Zealand from London on the Jessie Osborne’s maiden voyage on 7th November 1875, with the four youngest of their twelve children, William, Thomas, Hannah and James. Three children had died young in Scotland (all except one of their remaining children came to New Zealand at a later date). They arrived in Dunedin on 29th January 1876.

John Burns worked as a gardener/labourer and died aged 78 on 2nd Dec 1899. Margaret had lived in the Roslyn district for 40 years and when she died aged 94 on 22nd March 1917, she had lived through the reigns of five British monarchs from George IV. Margaret Burns is interred here in the Northern Cemetery along with her husband John and other family members.
