Arthur Robert Nichols was the third son of Charles and Mary Nichols, who had nine children in all. He was born 19 November 1868 at Launceston, Tasmania. His father was a successful businessman, a partner in Dalgety Nichols and Company. After Charles died in a coaching accident in 1878 Mary brought her children to England, where Arthur attended school. In 1885 Arthur’s elder brother Joseph bought Kuriheka, a 31,000-acre estate in Otago, and Arthur came out from England to help him farm. He drowned at Kuriheka on 10 July 1888 during a flood of the Island Stream. Arthur is buried with his father Charles Nichols.
