James Brown, another early settler passed away on the 2nd May 1899 at his residence at Spring Bank, Herriot Row, Dunedin.

He was born on the Island of Bute in June 1811. He was a draper at Rothesay and came to Otago with his family in the ship Bernicia, arriving at Port Chalmers on 12 December 1848. He secured the section at the corner of Princes and Stafford street and continued as a draper. He bought and exported wool with such success that he was able to retire in his early sixties, leaving the drapery shop to his sons. The building later became a butcher shop, XYZ Butchery (Later, Barton’s Butchery).
