Samuel Fisher (c.1827-1905)

Samuel Fisher was a London silk merchant who fell on hard times during the 1880s depression. In 1885 he and his wife Mary and their two children, Harriet Isabel (Belle) and Frank, tried to escape the economic gloom by emigrating to New Zealand.

In Auckland, Samuel operated a milk run while Mary ran a downstairs confectioner’s shop and upstairs boarding house in Karangahape Road. Belle worked in the shop, and Frank had a small farm at Birkenhead.

Belle married one of the boarding house guests, Alfred Hamish Reed, who was working for a typewriter company, but soon left for Dunedin, where he founded what became the publishing firm of A.H. & AW Reed.

About 1901, Samuel and Mary Fisher went to live with their daughter and son-in-law in Dunedin, where Samuel died on 23 May 1905, aged 78. He was buried in the Northern Cemetery two days later. Mary returned to Auckland to live with her son Frank until her death.
