Stuart Hawthorne was the sixth and youngest child of Bryce Hawthorne and Mary Quee and was born in County Down, Ireland on 11 March 1833. His father died in Ireland before 1840. In May 1840, when Stuart was 7 years old, the family migrated to Australia. Just days after their arrival in Sydney in November, Stuart’s closest brother John died, just a day after his 12th birthday. Stuart was an exceptionally bright child. He was educated at the Presbyterian School, Pitt Street South and at Sydney University, graduating with a BA (1857) and MA (1863). He was assistant master at Sydney Grammar School (1858-1860) and at the Australian Ladies’ College (1860-1862). He was instrumental in establishing the Glebe National (now Public) School in November 1861. He opened his own boarding institution, University (later College) Hall in January 1862, which was a non-denominational college of Sydney University. He was founding Headmaster of Ipswich Grammar School (1863-1868), during which time he was involved with the founding of the North Ipswich National (Primary) School. In New Zealand, he was the third official Rector of Otago Boys’ High School after Rev Thomas Campbell (1863, died before taking up duty) and Rev Frank Simmons (1864-1867). Stuart Hawthorne was the uncle of Rev Sydney Hawthorne, who was a controversial Anglican priest in Devonport near Auckland in the early 1900s. Stuart Hawthorne died in Dunedin from hepatitis on 8 June 1875.
