Margaret Marshall Guthrie (1871–1955)

Margaret Marshall Guthrie (née Hepburn) was the fifth child of William and Margaret Hepburn (formerly Ross, née Marshall) of “Athelstane”, Wakari, Dunedin. She was born on 29 August 1871 at Wakari.

Margaret was known as “Maggie” by her family and friends. She attended Wakari School, Dunedin (admitted 16 Jan 1875 and again on 16 Jan 1878. Ref: NZSG Index CD 2003). It is likely that the 1875 date is incorrect — probably a transcription error. She was only three years old in 1875.

In 1893 Margaret was recorded on the first Parliamentary Electoral Roll for women. She resided in the Caversham Electorate at Hart Street, Roslyn, Dunedin.

She married Walter John Guthrie in 1900. The ceremony was held “in the house of Mrs. Margaret Hepburn, Roslyn” (Marriage Certificate entry). Margaret was her mother, and the house was in Leven Street. The officiating minister was Rev. William Hewitson and the witnesses were J.N. Lawson (a cousin) and J.H. Hepburn (sister). Margaret bore five children: Margaret (b. 1901), Walter (1903), Nora (1905), Colin (1906) and Cicely (1914).

For many years after the death of Walter, Margaret resided at 69 Clyde Street, Dunedin.
