Ann (Unsworth) Yates (1796 – 1873)

Ann (Unsworth) Yates was christened on 6th February 1796 at Deane By Bolton, Lancashire, England. Her parents, Edmund Unsworth (born 1761 at Deane, Lancashire) and Alice Brown, were married on 30th April 1786 at Deane By Bolton, Lancashire. Anne’s siblings were Betty (Elizabeth), who was born in 1784 (marriages could be a bit late in those days), Alice (christened on the 22nd September 1800) and Edmund (christened on 21st July 1806 at Peel By Bolton, Lancashire). Ann Unsworth married William Yates on 13th July 1817 at Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire, England.

Ann died in Dunedin, New Zealand, on 9th June 1873 at the recorded age of 74 years, but she was definitely older than that! Burial records show that she had been in New Zealand for ten years. Presumably she came to Dunedin from Tasmania with the Gollar and Yates families. They would have included her son, John Yates, and his wife, Mary Ann Knowles, and William Yates, their young son. Information given by Mary Ann Knowles to the undertakers was incorrect as she gave Anne (Unsworth) Yates’s husband’s name as John, when it is correct on the death certificate. Mind you, Mary could neither read nor write.

William and Ann Yates’s children included:

 – Thomas Yates (christened 14th October 1821 at Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire)

 – William Yates (christened 14th April 1824 at St Peter, Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire)

 – John Yates (christened 26th June 1825, also at St Peter)

 – David Yates (born 7th February, 1836)

Anne (“Granny Gollar”) Yates was born three years after the boys. One reason that the Yates families ended up in Tasmania may have been that their son, Thomas Yates, was convicted of stealing at the age of fourteen (convict number 165), and transported to Tasmania aboard the Leyton in 1835.

Others buried here: Ann’s son John and his wife Mary; and their son William, his wife Annie, and their daughter Margaret.
