James Clark Brown (1830-1891)

James was born at Macclesfield, Cheshire, the son of Alexander Brown. In 1853, he set off for the Victorian gold rush, but gave this up to run a steamship between Sydney and Hobart, the Macclesfield. In 1861, he left for Gabriels Gully. Before long, he turned to shopkeeping, and set up a chain of ‘A1 Victoria Stores’. He sold out of these in 1865, and entered a timber business. In 1870-71 he was a partner in the Tuapeka Times. He was involved in various other ventures after this.

When he was 49, he married Ellen Halley at Tuapeka. He entered the Otago Provincial Council in 1865-76, and Parliament from 1870. He was active in the community as a JP, and a member of various boards. He lost his Parliamentary seat in 1890, and died at St Clair, Dunedin, on 6 February 1891.
