Harry Lionel Sprosen, born in Milton, Otago, moved to Dunedin and became assistant to Bernard Isaac of the Octagon Drug Hall Ltd. Harry qualified as a chemist in 1892 (reputedly the yongest chemist in NZ) and purchased the business a year later. He was the first retailer od photographic goods in Dunedin.

H.L.Sprosen Ltd became a well Known chemist shop at 1 George Street on the north east corner of the Octagon and for over fifty years was known as Sprosen’s corner. In the late 1950s the shop was sold to his manager, but the pharmacy retained the name Sprosen till the 1970s when the orignal building was demolished.

Harry was a member of the Dunedin Ambulance corps (St John Ambulance) and was awarded a medal for over 50 years of service.
