Son of James and Rebecca Barr. Born 24 October 1809 at Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Educated at a parish school. Became an engineer, and established the shipbuilding firm Barr and McNab. Married Mary Jamieson Lamb, 11 April 1844; the couple had two sons and at least two daughters. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1852 and became a farmer at Wakari and Kaihiku. Retired to Dunedin about 1861. Enjoyed popular success as a poet; made laureate to Caledonian Society of Otago, inaugurated the Burns Club and gave frequent public readings. Published (1861) Poems and songs, descriptive and satirical (reprinted with additions, 1874). Awarded a gold medal by Caledonian Society in 1868. Died at Dunedin 18 September 1899. From: |
