Daniel Campbell (1822-1900)

Daniel Campbell was born in Edinburgh in1822. Before emigrating to Dunedin, he was employed at the well-known printing and publishing firm of Constable and Co.

Arriving in Dunedin to work for the proprietors of the Otago Witness as printer and publisher from the time of its establishment, he rose to the position of manager in 1861. He also became manager of the Otago Daily Times when it commenced publication.

He was a prominent and familiar figure in connection with various commercial and industrial enterprises in Dunedin, and at one time one of the largest property owners in the city.

Daniel Campbell was elected to the City Council in 1875, and sat as a member for the Bell Ward until the 1st of August, 1877.

In the early 1880s Daniel sustained severe losses in connection with landed property in Southland, and after visiting California and remaining there for some years he returned to Dunedin, where he lived in semi-retirement for the rest of his life.

Daniel Campbell died on July 21,1900. He left a widow, seven daughters and two sons.
