Charles Herbert Guthrie (1877–1913)

Charles Herbert Guthrie, sixth child of Henry and Isabella Guthrie, was born at 18 Pitt Street, Dunedin, on 18 June 1877. He was educated at Miss Forsyth’s School, George Street School (enrolled 2 February 1885, left 17 November 1891) and Otago Boys’ High School. The school registers recorded that his address was Elder Street, Dunedin.

As a young man, he joined the stock-and-station company NMA (the National Mortgage & Agency Co. of New Zealand Ltd) in Dunedin, moved to Timaru, and, after marriage to Jessie Helena Hepburn in 1902, set up home in Waimate, South Canterbury, where he became local manager for the NMA.

Charles’s untimely death was the result of a motor accident at Kingsdown, near Timaru, on 25 January 1913, when the car in which he was a passenger had a tyre blowout and rolled, and he was thrown out and crushed. He died at the scene. (Ref: Coroner’s Report, Timaru Herald). Charles was only 35 years old. His Monumental Inscription in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin, states Charles died in Waimate, but this is incorrect.

Charles’s brother Henry James Guthrie was the founder of the well-known company Guthrie Bowron.
