LARNACH ‘Sans Peur’ Eliza Jane Guise Born 10th May, 1842 died 8th November 1880 [Monument is a miniature Gothic tomb which can be entered. Tiled floor and very high spire. Designed by R.A. Lawson.] |
Kate Larnach (1862-1891) Kate Larnach, the daughter of Eliza (née Guise) and William Larnach, was born in Australia and came to Dunedin with her family when she was four. William Larnach was a prominent politician and businessman in Dunedin, and Kate was his favourite daughter. She was sent to England, along with her brothers and sisters, to study for eight years. Kate also studied languages and music in Leipzig, Germany. But not very successfully: William was unimpressed when she couldn’t play the piano without music sheets, after she returned home when money started to run out. This worried Larnach, because he thought that music and languages could allow Kate to support herself as a governess if his business interests continued to fail. But this would be something that the other children would have to contend with, not Kate, because she died of typhoid in 1891. She was buried in the Larnach family tomb, along with her father, mother and aunt Mary. — See: Fleur Snedden (1997) King of the Castle: A Biography of William Larnach. — Other burials recorded at this site: |
