David White was one of New Zealand’s foremost educators. Born in Edinburgh in 1847, White was the son of a carpenter.

The family emigrated to Hobart and, in 1862, to Otago where David spent some years working for a seedsman. He participated in the West Coast gold rushes in 1866 and then returned to Dunedin to study as a teacher. He taught at various schools in Dunedin – in 1878 he became the first secretary of the Otago Educational Institute – and in 1883 was the founder and first secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute.

He also contributed to the training of teachers and from 1892, as a member of the University Council, sought to strengthen the links between the University and the Training College. He was appointed principal of the college in 1898, and in 1904 the first lecturer in education at the University. In 1909 he was appointed the honorary first professor of education.
