Ann Scanlan, née Cowan, was the wife of James Scanlan. They married in Melbourne in June 1860 and came to Dunedin in about 1862, Ann arriving with a baby some time after her husband. At first they camped on the site of the Chief Post Office. James worked on the goldfields and later became a publican, owning the Shamrock and Thistle Hotel in Great King Street, Dunedin, where he and Ann and their children lived for many years.

Ann Scanlan died on 26th March 1904 at the age of 62 years. She is buried here in the cemetery with her husband and children.
