Nathan Walter Moyse was born in 1843 in Bradford, Devon, England, the second son of John and Elizabeth Moyse. His father, John, was a farmer. There were five other children in the family.

In 1851 they had moved to St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands.

On October 26 1873, Nathan, who was apparently already widowed, married Mary Jane Helleur in the parish of St Saviour, Jersey. Mary Jane, (nee Connelly) was also widowed but had two daughters, Annie and Augusta, by her previous husband. They had no children between them. At this time Nathan was a coachbuilder.

On 15 December 1873 they set sail from Plymouth on board the Scimitar, for Port Chalmers. It was an ill-fated journey (well documented) with many dying and the ship quarantined on arrival at Port Chalmers. Nathan’s occupation was recorded as wheelright at this time.

Nathan was followed to Port Chalmers ten years later by his younger brother, James Walter Moyse, wife Ann and two children.

Both Ann and Augusta used the name Moyse and attended Opoho School. The family lived in Forth Street and Nathan owned The City Steam Laundry on the corner of Cumberland and Union Streets.

Nathan died in on 21 March 1886 at the age of 42 and his wife Mary Jane is also buried in the same plot but she did not die until 1925 aged 88 years.
