Bio contributor:

William Edward Street was the son of William Parker and Margaret Street. He was accidentally shot by another boy at Saddle Hill on 8th December 1883, at the age of 14 years and 10 months. The boys were rabbit shooting and had lunch at the cottage belonging to the father of one of the boys, Mr Hawkes, the mine manager at Saddle Hill. It was his son who accidentally shot William Street there. At the time a large visiting party was inspecting the nearby goldmine, amongst its numbers was William Street’s father (who was at the time Mayor-elect of Dunedin), which made the sad event even worse as people, including the two fathers of the boys involved, rushed to the scene of the shooting.
